Acer Aspire One Netbook

Ran into a strange problem this week with my Acer One D250 Netbook. This netbook is a triple boot system with Windows Server 2003, Windows XP Home, and Fedora Linux 11. I attempted to flash from my 1.06 bios to the newer 1.14 bios, this did not go well. Upon reboot All three operating systems refused to boot.   After changing some settings in the bios (SATA mode changed from AHCI to IDE specifically) I was able to get Windows XP to boot very slowly. I then returned to the 1.06 Bios.

However I am not wholly sure weather that cause the following problem or if this problem was caused because I plugged the unit into an external monitor. Upon trying to boot Fedora 11 linux again the netbook would begin to log me in and then spit me back out to the login screen with no message. After puzzling and reading up for a bit I found that my own experience was best here. I solved the problem by going into my linux filing system. You can do this either with a live CD, through the command line (which is available by pressing CTRL-ALT-F2 and logging in), or like I did using Ext2Fsd to access the partition from Windows.   I then went into \home\%USER%\.gconf \   and found a file called something along the lines of “monitor”, this file was the cause of the problem delete the file and you will be able to log in again.
The linux problem is caused by a bad monitor configuration file. The Windows crash was cause by the 1.14 bios. And yes this machine runs all three operating systems beautifully.  Hope this helps somebody.

I am not sure what your symtoms are but the article covers how I got the Bios Upgraded/Downgraded. In some cases you may not want to upgrade the bios on your aspire one. Just let me know what problems you are having and I will try to walk you through it.

Re: Acer Aspire One D250 Netbook Bios Update and Linux Problem.

Is there any bonus in updating the bios? There is a serious lack of forums for this machine and I see hints that the updated bios may include the android OS but the size seems to suggest otherwise... I would like to get android on there cuz it would allow a quicker boot when just wanting to brows etc, Im not too bothered about it but I do like to "play" so was interested to see what the android OS could do.

Thanks

Re: Acer Aspire One D250 Netbook Bios Update and Linux Problem.

There is no advantage to updating the bios unless it specifically fixes a problem you are having. Also Android is an O/S for telephone, not netbooks. Android is also not loaded through bios and changing bios will not change the O/S. If you (As I suspect you are) looking for Googles new operating system for netbooks it is called Chromium and I would recommend you wait a couple of months before using it as it is still under heavy development. Hope this helps.

Re: Acer Aspire One D250 Netbook Bios Update and Linux Problem.

There is a D250 with android, it's a dual boot so you can launch android or xp, the register has a review. I just wondered how i would get my hands on a copy, as i said there doesn't seem to be much support. :( I will keep searching and if I find anything I shall report back ;)

Re: Acer Aspire One D250 Netbook Bios Update and Linux Problem.

You will need an install disk for Android, and all the drivers for the D250 in Android. Again though Android is a telephone O/S and although it will boot fast it is not going to be the right thing for a netbook. Google is developing a fast booting netbook O/S for just this type of thing. It is call Chromium and I think you would have much better luck Getting/Install/Using that on your D250.

Re: Acer Aspire One D250 Netbook Bios Update and Linux Problem.

sorry for all the double posting, for some reason it keeps taking me back to the site where I posted my comment and therefor posting again...

www.reghardware.co.uk/2009/11/14/review_netbook_acer_aspire_one_d250_android/

Above is the link to the registers review of the d250 with android, they basically give it an average rating as it's nothing new really and as u say isn't exactly a polished example but it does clearly have all the drivers etc ;)

Re: Acer Aspire One D250 Netbook Bios Update and Linux Problem.

Here check this link. At a glance this looks like what you need. www.android-x86.org/releases/build-20091113 . This site is about the porting of Android to standard computer hardware and they seem to have Downloadable CD's that can boot/install the O/S. Good luck and let me know what you find out. Now you have me interested too.

Re: Acer Aspire One D250 Netbook Bios Update and Linux Problem.

Ye I question the usefullness of installing the OS appart from quick email, internet and music lestening but I am drawn to installing it like a moth to a light hehe ;)

If you have the 3G version it looks like it even has drivers for that! what a miffout I donot :(

Re: Acer Aspire One D250 Netbook not charge the battery

hi
I have been having problems with the AAO D250
but I have the small problem of not charging the battery, only up to 85% of battery capacity
and in my opinion I updated the bios (from version 1.02 to version 1.07) but it still does not load
anyone can help me with this problem and I downloaded bios update from version 1.07 to 1.27

Re: Acer Aspire One D250 Netbook Bios Update and Linux Problem.

Fernando,
I am betting the reason for not charging is that one of the cells inside the battery went bad. Nothing to do but replace the battery or risk battery acid and replace the faulty cell inside the battery(Not Recommended). Batteries do go bad, and some do so in the first year or two. If you need to revert your BIOS just follow the instructions above.

You keep saying ... "If you need to revert your BIOS just follow the instructions above.", but you never actually explain how to do that.
