I have been playing with the new My Movies 3 the past couple of weeks on my main media center computer. I have also been playing a bit with standalone versions of XBMC as I recently came into a computer capable of working well with it. The reason I have put both of these together is that I didn’t realize that My Movies had the ability until recently to write the XML files that XBMC can read from your media directories. For me this is just one more feature that locks in My Movies 3 as king of the Media Center Apps for me. Not to mention the nice new layouts, and backgrounds in the new version worth paying the money for access to all features if you can.
As I said before there is an option to have My Movies write the XML files for XBMC
(And several other Media Centers/Media Programs). Using this feature makes keeping information consistent and available across multiple platforms. This really makes it easy to throw an Xbox running XBMC, or a standalone HTPC running XBMC into the mix without feeling like you are wasting a lot of time on setup. Plug in, tell it where the media is, and you have access to the same info as you do in My Movies.
This isn’t without setup, and I would say that if you are anything like me and have only a very basic procedure for Media Storage you will have a lot of work. However once whip you media collection into shape, and begin using the new My Movie system to organize your collection you will really improve your media collection.
As for the latest PC versions of XBMC It is a nice looking and easy to use Media Center. However it seems to be to single purpose for me. Most of the plug-ins no longer function , leaving it as just a fancy looking audio and video playback machine. If you use it on an original Xbox at least you can use emulators or launch games. I just don’t see the purpose of dedicating a whole computer (a reasonably decent one at that) to audio and video playback alone. Without a Pentium 4, 512MB Ram, and an decent Nvida or ATI video card XBMC really crawls. It is a very nice looking and easy to use system though; I only wish that Xbox 360 modding would take off so we could start seeing versions of XBMC on that. An Xbox 360 Version of XBMC with Emulators, Games, and Healthy working development scene for plug-ins via Xbox Hackers would pretty much blow everything else out of the water.

thats pretty cool, I will have to check that out. My problem with anything touching my main media store is that I have some set top media players like patriot box office. If the program drops to many files (like jpg's for each episode).
